What is a Nursing Home?
A nursing home is a place where generally sick, aged or handicapped patients reside in order to receive adequate treatment. It is a medical facility providing services similar to a hospital. Nursing homes are staffed with licensed nurses, shared rooms, hospital beds, regular scheduled doctor rounds, meals and housekeeping. These homes often provide a more pleasant setting with optimal nurse to patient ratios and relaxed atmospheres. Nursing homes provide care to those who require personalized patient care. They provide both long-term and short-term care solutions for seniors.
Nursing homes provide solutions for patients with complex medical issues such as major infections, wound care, IV therapy, tube feeding, and physical/occupational therapy. Mental issues are also included such as dementia. Nursing homes provide facilities and care for seniors that are unable to care for themselves on daily basis such as those who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Although they are still not perfect by any means, nursing homes today are much improved over their predecessors. In the1950’s and 1960’s, nursing homes were scary places for senior citizens. Nursing homes have come a long way over the past decades. The trend has changed nowadays. Certain requirements are now strictly met in order for nursing homes to continue operation and to qualify for government funding programs such as Medicaid and Medicare.
